Hawke's Bay Bayleys Wine Awards 2022 - Gold Medal
Cuisine Magazine, June 2023 - 5 Stars
James Suckling, September 2022 - 97 Points
A deep nose of blackcurrants, crushed sage, melted chocolate and crushed stone. Full-bodied with structured, slightly chewy tannins. Powerful and seamless with rich black fruit at its core. So much to unpack here. Herbs and spice flicker as the opulent fruit sets in and evolves on the palate. Generous. Intense finish. Superb. Sustainable. Best after 2025.
Bob Campbell MW, September 2022 - 98 Points
Dense, inky red with cassis, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, cedar and spicy oak flavours. Massive wine that is surprisingly accessible now but will certainly reward anyone who chooses to cellar it. Responds well to aeration.
Cameron Douglas MS, October 2022
This is a fantastic wine from strat to finish. A deep core of opaque purple hues and pink rim, colour staining of the tears lead to a bouquet of richness, ripeness, complexity and power. Flavours of blackberries and dark cherry, sweet tobacco and boysenberry. Tannins are ripe, firm and abundant, acidity is also ripe providing contrast to the core fruits mid-palate and with the tannins a solid foundation. The combination of fruit and tructure showcase a wine that will age for another 10-15 years, is very complex and lengthy. Great drinking today and through 2035+.
The Prison Block gets its name from a three-quarter-hectare section in our “Gimblett Stones” vineyard behind Roys Hill originally earmarked for the Hawke’s Bay Regional Correctional Facility. The Clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted there produce tiny berries with intense colour, concentrated/complex flavours, ripe tannins, and balanced acidity. All the hallmarks necessary to produce a wine worthy of a single vineyard release.
