Tasting Notes 

If one was ever to wonder what wholly pure, transparent Pinot Noir tasted like from our Raupo vineyard slope named Osip, this is certainly it. Single site, single plot, single clone has been hand harvested and crafted in amphora, preserving the true character of Pinot Noir. Layered, vibrant and concentrated. The only ingredient here is the grape itself. This wine has been bottle unfiltered and unfined.

Winemaking

The Pinot Noir was handpicked on March 8th, our first pick of the season. The fruit was fermented as two batches – the first, destemmed and fermented in amphorae. The second – fermented carbonically as whole bunches. After 28 days on skins, and daily plunging by hand, both batches were gently pressed together and put back into the amphorae and three neutral barriques for aging for three months. It was bottled without any stabilisation, fining, filtration or added sulphur.

Vintage

The season commenced with a stunningly dry winter, ensuring no interruptions to our pruning and enabling an early budburst across the board. Spring is remembered for strong winds, and, although the fine weather remained in general, a few significant rain events kept the soil moisture levels decent and the vine growth fresh. The conditions over the whole vintage period were extremely favourable, textbook Marlborough in fact, with warm days and cool nights. We commenced harvest early on March 8th for our Beautiful Chaos Pinot Noir, and continued slowly yet rigorously, until our final pick, for Beautiful Chaos Syrah, on April 8th.

Viticulture

Our clay rich Raupo Creek vineyard, farmed following organic and biodynamic principles is located in the centre of the Omaka Valley. This vineyard has a gentle north-west facing aspect and enjoys high sunshine hours and minimal rain.
